Our book of the month is Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia. It is less about the burbs and more about dislocation. The main character is a youth and the reader gets to watch him grow up. He lives through many moments that lead us to believe if you like Burroughs you’ll like this book.
Karim becomes an actor when his father leaves his mother for Eva, a middle aged woman that sees the dad as a buddha, at least at first. The father figure is tromped to party after party to lead white suburbanites through meditation. His only qualification is the color of his skin.
This book is not for everyone, but for those with open minds it is a real gem.
